11 October 2016Regent school students visit The Sustainable City
After a preparation that took some time (as you might remember), and despite the fact that the City is not yet fully functional, we took Year 4 students from Regent International School to The Sustainable City.
They could see a number of features that make this City a unique urban planning experiment in Dubai. They first could observe the houses, oriented in a way that a minimal direct sunshine reaches the windows, avoiding thereby greenhouse effect inside the houses.

A biodome for local farming. It looks like a greenhouse but instead of warming up the air it cools it down… Using evaporative cooling on metallic structures.
A zoom on evaporative cooling. Evaporative cooling works exactly as sweat! But also as ancient pottery coolers, based on water evaporation to evacuate heat and cool down water or food, often used in desert areas.
Our famous… Solar oven with a pizza box! Very good for environmental education
Beware of … The bird poop effect! It can drastically decrease the power out of a solar panel, even if only one of the cells on the panel is in the shade.
